NHL Calder Memorial Trophy Prediction | News Article by handicapper911.com

The Calder Trophy is equivalent to the Rookie of the Year award in the MLB, NBA, and NHL.

Obviously, the Chicago Blackhawks’ Connor Bedard is the heavy favorite, but some other rookies are looking to take the Calder for themselves.

As I mentioned above, Connor Bedard is the heavy favorite to win the Calder and has -150 odds to do so. The 18-year-old wunderkind was the first pick of the 2023 NHL and coveted by every team in the NHL.

I can only describe the hype around Bedard as similar to Lebron James’s. The British Columbia native has had a decent start to the season and has four goals and two assists in nine games. Six points in games will not knock anyone’s socks off, but Bedard’s potential makes this situation particularly interesting. The center is quite physical on the ice and is active in the passing lanes.

Bedard has the potential to make the All-Star team this year and should be feared by all opposing defensemen.

The New Jersey Devils’ Luke Hughes is tied for the second-best odds to win the Calder with odds of 750. Hughes is an interesting player; he is an excellent player and surprisingly big for a defenseman. The 20-year-old is 6’2” and 190 lbs.

That combination of height and speed makes him a menacing defensive presence and gives him a lot of offensive ability. The former Michigan Wolverine has one goal and six assists through nine games this season.

Overall, Hughes has a tremendous amount of upside, but he is competing with Connor Bedard for this award and will have an incredibly tough time outperforming him.

Calder Memorial Trophy Winners
Seattle Kraken Matty Beniers / 2023 Moritz Seider / 2022 Detroit Red Wings
Minnesota Wild Kirill Kaprizov / 2021 Cale Makar / 2020 Colorado Avalanche

The Arizona Coyotes’ Logan Cooley also has 750 odds to win the Calder. Cooley was drafted in 2022 but made his NHL debut this season. The 19-year-old is a small center but has a high ceiling. He is really quick and fast and a tremendous passer. He may need to put on size to prevent injuries, but he has shown flashes of brilliance throughout his short career.

I recommend playing it safe and betting on Connor Bedard to win the Calder Trophy. He has the most eyes on him and could easily have 80 points this season.
