MLB AL Cy Young Update | News Article by handicapper911.com

The AL Cy Young award is not too contested this season, but a few names have emerged from the pack. The frontrunners for this award are Gerrit Cole, Luis Castillo, and Sonny Gray. Of these three, Gerrit Cole stands out among these three.

Even though he played on an underwhelming New York Yankees team, the 33-year-old had a dominant season and was a force on the mound.

Cole has been nothing short of excellent in his four years as a Yankee. He has never had an ERA above 3.50 and a WHIP above 1.06. With that being said, 2023 was his best season yet in a pinstripe uniform. The Orange County, CA native started 33 games this year and finished with a 15-4 record.

His ERA of 2.63 was the second-lowest in the league, and his 0.98 WHIP was the best in baseball. Cole was also a strikeout machine and finished the year with 222 K’s. I do not need to say much more. The righty managed to put together a career year in the back half of his career and is the odds-on favorite to win the AL Cy Young.

I would have to agree with this assessment and would recommend betting on him to win it this year.

Seattle’s Luis Castillo has the next best odds to win the AL Cy Young. Castillo was key to the Mariner’s late-season run and is a top-ten pitcher in the MLB. The Dominican native threw nearly 200 innings this year and had a 3.34 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP.

This was Castillo’s best season in the last five years, but it will not be enough to earn him his first Cy Young.

Minnesota’s Sonny Gray did not receive a ton of run support this season and only finished with an 8-8 record.

However, that 8-8 record comes with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. Gray may be 33, but he is dealing on the mound. With that being said, he averaged less than six innings a start and was not throwing as deep into games as Cole and Castillo.

Gerrit Cole is not significantly better than Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray, but he is noticeably better and will be named the best pitcher in the American League.
