In baseball betting, one of the most popular wagers is the total, often referred to as over/under.
This bet is based on the combined number of runs scored by both teams in a game.
Sportsbooks set a projected total—say 8.5—and you choose whether the actual score will go over or under that number. For example, if the final score is 5–4, that’s 9 total runs—over 8.5.

Like all bets, totals come with juice, typically shown as -110 on either side. That means you wager $110 to win $100. Sometimes, you’ll see uneven juice like o9.5 (-105) / u9.5 (-115), which reflects the sportsbook adjusting odds based on betting action or anticipated outcomes.
When to Bet the Over
Overs tend to hit more often when:
- Weather is warm and the wind is blowing out, especially at hitter-friendly parks like Coors Field.
- Pitchers are struggling, either from fatigue or poor form.
- Bullpens are overused, making late-game runs more likely.
- The home plate umpire has a tight strike zone, leading to more walks and longer at-bats.
- Lineups are fully healthy and hitting well.

Unders are smart plays when:
- Wind is blowing in, especially in outdoor parks like Wrigley Field.
- Aces are pitching, especially early in the season when arms are fresh.
- Teams are in slumps or have several key batters injured.
- The umpire has a wide strike zone and favors pitchers.
- Night games tend to be cooler and suppress scoring.
