A quick glance at the MLB standings and you can make the fair assumption that the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers are on a collision course in the World Series.
But the playoffs are there for a reason, and many times the top seeds don’t make it to the Fall Classic. The Indians and Dodgers aren’t paying out much value with their sports bet odds to win the World Series, priced at +500 and +250 respectively. That means there is money to be made on some of the other clubs that are positioned to be postseason bound this October.
Before you blindly pull the trigger on a World Series bet on L.A. or Cleveland, consider taking a not-so long shot bet on these legit contenders:
Chicago Cubs +650
The defending World Series winners should not be counted out. Chicago had a bad start to the 2017 season and was fighting to stay afloat in the National League Central. However, the talent of the Cubbies’ roster would not be denied and eventually Chicago got on track and found its way to the top of the division.
The Cubs are averaging more than six runs per game since the All-Star break – tops in the majors – while boasting a 4.06 ERA in that span – 10th in the bigs. This staff can and will perform better and has the experience of a World Series run under its belt. Chicago is heating up at the right time too, having won five in a row heading into Sunday. It may not be a best odds, due to the popularity of the Cubs, but they are just as capable as the Dodgers when it comes to winning it all and paying out at more than double the return.
Minnesota Twins +3,000
The Indians and Astros (+450 to win World Series) have drawn all the attention in the American League, which means under-the-radar clubs like the Twins get sky-high odds. Minnesota isn’t officially in the postseason, sitting tied with the Yankees in the Wild Card standings. The Twinkies have been crushing the ball since the break, plating more than 5.5 runs per outing.
Minnesota does have a glaring weakness on the mound, ranking 20th in team ERA and boasting a bullpen that’s even more shaky. The Twins do, however, have plenty of experience dealing with the Indians. They’re 6-10 versus Cleveland so far this season, and that includes stealing five of those wins at Progressive Field.
Colorado Rockies +2,500
The Rockies have been a huge surprise all summer. Colorado started with the bang and the betting public never really bought in. Here we are two weeks out from October, and the Rockies are in the mix for a Wild Card spot and rolling with wins in seven of their last nine games. Colorado has done it with offense – surprise, surprise – knocking in over five runs a contest and sitting second in batting average in the Bigs.
The big hook though is that the Rockies have had success outside of the thin air at Coors Field. This club is an outstanding 39-36 on the road and has won games in Los Angeles, recently sweeping the Dodgers in a three-game set at Chavez Ravine. Colorado has a deep lineup, headlined by National League MVP candidate Nolan Arenado, and could be that one NL team that no one wants to run into. At 25/1, the Rockies are definitely worth a roll of the dice.
